FAQ's

FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that affects a cat’s immune system, making them more vulnerable to infections and illness. It is most commonly spread through bite wounds, so outdoor and adventurous cats are at higher risk. FIV can also be passed from an infected mother cat to her kittens during birth or nursing. 
 
Symptoms of FIV commonly include chronic gum inflammation, recurrent skin or respiratory infections, persistent fever, weight loss. Advanced stage symptoms can include neurological disorders, cancers, kidney disease or kidney failure.
 
It is recommended that all cats are tested for FIV at least once in their lifetime.
FIV can have a long asymptomatic period, so many infected cats may appear healthy for years after initial infection. As the virus progresses slowly, when clinical signs do appear, they are usually due to the immune system’s reduced ability to fight off common secondary infections and diseases, rather than the virus itself. That’s why the FIV test is so important for diagnosis. 
 
It is recommended that all cats are tested for FIV at least once in their lifetime, especially if they are outdoor cats or new to a home with other cats.

No, the FIV test can be performed in your veterinary consultation, wellness health check or vaccination appointment. Simply book your appointment as usual and mention the free test.

Our in-house FIV test takes around 10-15 minutes, so you’ll have the results before leaving the clinic.

Yes! The FIV test requires a routine blood draw (don’t worry, we only need a few drops!) performed by our experienced team.

If your cat tests positive, our team will discuss what this means for your cat, and what you can do to keep them healthy. With proper management, infected cats can live long, healthy, and happy lives.
 
For FIV+ cats, we recommend they be kept indoors, or indoors with access to an outdoor enclosure. Keeping them indoors helps prevent the spread of the virus to other cats and reduces their exposure to other pathogens.
 
FIV+ cats will need good nutrition with a high quality, balanced diet, a low-stress environment, and regular monitoring. We recommend regular visits (every 6 months) to monitor their health and promptly treat any secondary infections.
