Wellness Checks

Our aim is to prevent illness, not just treat it.

At the Belmont Vet Centre, we believe it is very important to have 6 monthly wellness visits for life. The reason we think this is so important is because our furry friends age seven times faster than we do. Every wellness visit includes a full health check and is also a great time to can address any concerns you may be having with your beloved pet.

Vaccination Wellness Visit

Our wellness visit happens 6 months after our vaccination wellness visit. In this wellness visit, we will start by giving your pet a basic health check. We will check weight, blood pressure, temperature, skin, eyes, ears and also get a history of how your pet has been going since we last saw them. The vet will then check your pets heart, lungs, bones, muscles and address any issues yourself or the nurse have discovered.

At your wellness visit, we need to obtain a blood sample from your pet (no, you don’t have to watch!). Often we will need to clip a small area of hair from your pet to obtain this.

Our wellness blood tests are a screening tool to see what is going on inside your pet. It also provides us with a baseline of what is normal for every individual, in case this ever changes in their lifetime. If any abnormalities do show up in any stage in their lifetime, this annual test will enable us to pick it up early and start treatment. Once again, prevention is better than cure!

Between 5 and 20% of dogs that are regularly dewormed still have some intestinal parasites. Also, 17% of humans have antibodies against a roundworm parasite, having picked this up from their pets. We believe that annual faecal testing helps us to determine if our pets are carrying these parasites, despite being on a regular worming protocol. If parasites are detected in this sample, we are then able to treat your pet accordingly.

Vaccinations are a vital component to pet health and protection against potentially fatal diseases. At your vaccination wellness visit, we will start by giving your pet a basic health check. We will check their weight, blood pressure, temperature, skin, eyes, ears and also get a history of how your pet has been going. The vet will then check your pet’s heart, lungs, bones, muscles and address any issues. If all is well with your pet, an individual vaccination program will be decided. For more information on dog vaccinations click here or for cat vaccinations click here.
