Feeding Your Puppy
It is important that you feed young puppies 3 or even 4 times daily as they burn lots of energy and are unable to store glucose/sugars for any length of time. By the time your puppy is 12 weeks old 2-3 meals daily is plenty and by 6 months 1-2 times daily is enough. Adult dogs need only be fed once daily in a way that suits the family lifestyle
Nutrition is particularly critical in puppies as it assists in brain and bone development and growth. Puppies (all dogs) need a complete and balanced diet, and this is easily achieved with dry food. Complete means that the food has everything they need and balanced means that the food provides it in the correct amounts.
Remember that the pet food market is huge, and it is easy to be fooled by creative marketing. Just because we see brands on TV and social media doesn’t mean they are good for your dog. Invest in the best quality pet food you can afford and your pet will benefit.
Feeding Your Kitten
It is important that you feed young kittens 3-4 times daily, or even leave a little food out as kittens burn a lot of energy but are unable to store glucose for any length of time. To assist with dental hygiene in cats we recommend that you offer raw chicken wings, legs or necks at least 4-5 days per week. When doing this, don’t forgot to cut back on their meals to balance their calories. If feeding twice a day, a chicken wing can replace one of these meals. Other substitutes include a whole raw lamb chop, a whole fish or even some calamari rings. Large beef chunks or strips are an alternative for cats that will not chew bones.
It is important to teach your cat to eat these treats at an early age, introducing them to an adult can be difficult. Kittens love to chase a chicken wing on a piece of string.
